Jazz Con Class

jazzconclass imageI have discovered something about my taste in jazz through listening to Jose Reyes’ great Internet station, Jazz Con Class. His choice of recordings and his taste reaffirmed to me that the great classic jazz recordings from the ‘50s through the ‘70s were the heart of the music for me. Jazz flourished in these years in large part through the genius of men like Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan. Jose is bringing ’em back to musical life.

One’s taste in jazz can be an insecure thing. If you’ve been a critic as I have, you often feel you must justify your taste in some way, explain it to yourself, considering why you don’t respond to certain kinds of free jazz, say, or some of the received standards, or how certain things move you.

I’ve lived long enough to be exposed to most of the jazz language and many of its dialects. Of course you make choices, in part based on what you heard at a certain receptive point in your life. One of those choices for me was the hardbop style and its outgrowths which have always expressed to me something very singular about the jazz essence. The Procrastinator

This was powerfully evident last night when I pulled out and played a Lee Morgan CD, the Van Gelder/Blue Note reissue of The Procrastinator. As one of the reviewers on Amazon says, this set is “one of the best you never heard of,” a classic piece of post-hardbop by some of its most practiced performers: Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins, and Bobby Hutcherson. Lee Morgan is one of the great trumpet players of jazz in any era.

Another reviewer said, “Lee can make you cry, he can make you dance, he can make you quit your job and run away to Mallorca, or he can make you buckle down and practice your ax again.”

Way too much music of this era has just been overlooked or forgotten. Thanks to Jose, you can still hear and enjoy it.
